Efforts to find a cure for HIV are still in high demand with an Infectious Diseases Physician claiming there is an ‘enormous global effort’ underway to cure the disease.

The virus remains a big problem, with nearly 40 million people in the world living with HIV.

Associate Professor at Alfred Health, James McMahon, believes the disease is no longer a death sentence but claims a cure would be ideal in the near future.

“People in Australia with HIV who know their diagnosis can live long and healthy lives if they take treatment every day to suppress the virus down,” he told Dee Dee.

“There is an enormous global effort underway, a lot of that work is being done in Melbourne at places like the Alfred Hospital, the Doherty Institute and Monash Health.”
