Melbourne councils have spent tens of millions of dollars introducing purple-lidded glass bins for residents to improve the quality of recycled materials.

After receiving a letter from his local council announcing the purple glass bins would only be collected once every four weeks, 3AW Mornings host Tom Elliott questioned the need for the bins in the first place.

“Suddenly, they are so spectacularly unsuccessful that they are only going to be collected every four weeks,” he said.
