The importance of strong passwords

Leaving behind a record of internet accounts and passwords is critically important for loved ones to be able to access money, documents and information, funeral directors say.

But that’s not the only reason to get passwords sorted before you die, internet security expert Dr Mark Gregory says.

He told 3AW Breakfast using passwords with multiple characters and password management apps is the only way to go.

‘I think it’s most important people keep control of their passwords if nothing else,’ he said.

‘The way most people do it today is you look for an online application that manages your passwords and your access to accounts online.’

And it’s best to make passwords difficult to remember or crack.

‘There are pretty sophisticated systems out there to break into your accounts,’ he said.

‘If your passwords are not good, then you’re in trouble.’
