Don Ross is one of the Western Bulldogs’ immortals.

As a member of Footscray’s only premiership team back in 1954, he has been etched into the club’s folklore for 62 years.

But it nearly didn’t pan out for him.

Ross was on national service at the time, and he’d used up his leave passes by the time the Grand Final came around. So he was left with a choice of going AWOL or missing out the Grand Final.

Obviously, he chose to sneak out, and the rest is history.

Ross told Tony Jones the drama didn’t end there, as he was involved in a car accident on the way back to Melbourne.
