The ‘intensely scary’ situation unfolding in Turkey and Syria
Terrifying stories are emerging of people trapped in rubble in Turkey and Syria phoning family members asking for help, but there aren’t enough rescue crews to save them.
More than 7000 people have been confirmed dead following the earthquake disaster and aftershocks are ongoing.
World Vision program director for the Syria response, Clyton Beukes, says there are “simply not enough rescue crews right now”.

“People who are trapped under this rubble don’t only have contend with the intense pressure that comes with hundreds of tonnes of concrete but also the biting cold,” Mr Beukes told Neil Mitchell.
“This is catastrophic and I wish there was actually a word that was stronger than that … the images we’re seeing, the things we’re hearing, I almost cannot believe it to be honest.”
The World Health Organisation is estimating the death toll from the earthquakes will reach 20,000.
