Victoria is in the grips of a major teacher shortage on the eve of the new academic year.

There remains over 1,000 teacher vacancies before term 1 begins, leading Shane McInnes to question why teachers are being paid more interstate than in Victoria.

“Clearly remuneration is an issue and you’ve got to ask why,” he said on 3AW Afternoons.

“Our teachers are just as important as they are in New South Wales and Queensland, yet on average a first-year teacher in Victoria is paid $14,000 less than their Queensland counterparts and $8,000 less than a teacher on the other side of the Murray.”
