A live music venue in Ballarat is getting behind an international movement to get rid of plastic straws.

In California, a bill has been proposed to make it illegal for restaurant servers to give guests plastic straws unless requested.

Shaun Adams from Karova Bar in Ballarat said while they didn’t think a ban should go that far, they were supportive of International Straw Free Day on Saturday to make a conscientious environmental decision.

“It’s an incentive for us to back ourselves and go forward with it, and try and do our little bit and so our small part,” he said.

He said they were hopeful to weed the use of straws out all together at the bar.

“We think it’s a cause that is growing. We just think it’s a small change we can make.”
