Four is the “magic number” when it comes to conversation, according to an academic who has been studying how people socialise for decades.

Evolutionary psychologist from Oxford University, Robin Dunbar, says data collected from Britain, France and Iran shows the magic number is the same across cultures.

“If you look at … Shakespeare’s plays, he has this number down to a tee. He’s very, very careful in not getting the number of people in a conversation on the stage at the same time beyond what the audience can cope with,” he told Ross and Russel.
