The Allan government is set to reopen the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre, just two years after closing amid the state’s crime crisis and concerns about the state’s prison capacity.

The 60-year-old facility is set to reopen next year, but will need a multi-million dollar retrofit to make it fit for purpose, and Swinburne criminologist Dr Joel McGregor told Ross and Russ he’s worried about the move.

Press PLAY to hear him explain why

“I would actually argue that Victoria’s (detention) rates are falling,” Dr McGregor said.

“I don’t discredit community concern here, people want to feel safe.”
