Supermarkets in Australia are facing tighter regulations, which could see hefty fines for non-compliance.

A mandatory code of grocery conduct could be implement as part of a recommendations from a government report handed down on Monday.

Federal National Party leader David Littleproud told 3AW Drive says it was imperative there was more competition for the Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets across the country.

“There’s some nuances to the supermarket sector which need to be looked at in isolation,” Mr Littleproud said on 3AW.

“The big three supermarkets in this country control 74 per cent of the market…how do we increase that competition (is the question we’re looking at).”
