The new ‘groundbreaking’ device used as replacement for open heart surgeries

In a Victorian first, a team at The Alfred Hospital has replaced a leaky mitral valve in a Melbourne grandmother with a unique device using non-invasive keyhole surgery.

Cardiologist at The Alfred Hospital, Professor Tony Walton, believes the new treatment is “groundbreaking” as a replacement for open heart surgeries.

“Places like The Alfred Hospital are fantastic at supporting us to do what are new techniques which are pretty much groundbreaking,” Professor Walton told 3AW Breakfast.

“Ultimately the aim is to try and benefit our patients so they are feeling better and living longer.”
