Pet scams have seen an “overwhelming” rise in recent times, sparking concern for families wanting to purchase a pet.

Next week marks 2022 Scam Awareness Week with animal welfare groups calling for vigilance when buying or adopting a pet online.

“We’re overwhelmed with the amount of people that have been scammed recently,” Sandy Trujillo, Founder of Puppy Scam Awareness Australia, told Dee Dee.

Ms Trujillo had previously been scammed trying to buy a puppy for her mum.

“I got online, paid $1600 and then realised the puppy didn’t exist,” Ms Trujillo said.
