The iconic cliff diving spot known as The Pillars at Mt Martha has been closed after visitors to the site increased dramatically, leaving the site trashed.

There are also increasing concerns the cliff face is unstable and dangerous with so many tourists visiting the area and jumping off.

Local David Curtis told Tom Elliott it has become a ‘Facebook accessible activity’ and there were sometimes hundreds of people there.

‘You’ve got dangerous cliff tops, the geology is quite unstable,’ he said.

‘It’s very easy to destroy the vegetation and the cliff top.

‘The other reason would be the inconvenience and the dangers because there is no parking on the road.’

One resident reportedly collected bags of rubbish from the secluded site.
