Students boarding at Monash University have been hit with a rental increase they can barely afford for small rooms in residential halls.

A petition calling on the university to keep prices affordable for students has been signed by more than 500 people.

Several students were due to speak to Jacqui Felgate about the fee hikes, but pulled out citing concerns they could be evicted if they spoke to the media.

Media and communications officer from Renters and Housing Union, JR Hewitt, told Jacqui Felgate he believes the university is “using the market as an excuse to raise rent”.

In a statement, Monash University said:

“Due to the significant increase in operational costs of utilities, cleaning, maintenance and food, Monash Residential Services (MRS) will increase its fees for 2024. MRS remains committed to offering affordable rental rates for students, which are GST-free, and are as low as possible.

Students who live on campus benefit from easy access to their classes and learning facilities including libraries, study areas, laboratories, and research spaces.

The University has invested in enhancing the student experience with a greater range of services – medical, financial, health, as well as dining options and a full calendar of events year round.

MRS provides our students with pastoral care, support and enrichment opportunities, in addition to 24/7 live-in support with a Residential Support Team of peers and professional staff to offer guidance.

Freedom of speech and academic freedom are defining values of the University. The University’s Media and Social Media Policy which applies to students, sets out the approach for students who wish to engage with the media.”
