The problem with Australia Day (and it’s not just the date)

One of Australia’s most prominent Indigenous leaders says there’s no doubt Australia Day needs to be “done better” if it is to be embraced by the entire nation.

Neil Mitchell said on Tuesday he felt the controversial date, January 26, was just one of many issues why there was a reluctance for some to celebrate.

“I don’t think the date is the issue, it’s part of the issue, but I think there is a national cynicism, a reluctance to be jingoistic,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“I think the citizenship ceremonies are terrific, but the rest of it is a bit contrived, a bit try-hard.”

Warren Mundine from the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation said the country was definitely worth celebrating.

But he said something needed to change.

“Australia Day hasn’t been able to hit the nail on the head, I don’t think,” he said.
