The Victorian Council of Social Service is calling on government to mandate air conditioning in all rental properties.

Heating became a requirement for landlords to supply in March, 2021.

But as it stands, there is no requirement for cooling.

Emma King, CEO of the Victorian Council of Social Service, said Victoria’s recent heat wave only highlighted the problem.

“We know thousands of Victorian renters are battling in overheated rentals, getting sick and, actually, the number of people who die as a consequence of heat waves is huge,” she said.

“Extreme heat kills more Australians than any other form of natural disaster.”
