The ‘real problem’ behind Australia’s soft plastic recycling scheme collapse
The revival of Australia’s soft plastics recycling scheme is facing an indefinite delay, with government and industry efforts failing to revive the program.
REDcycle had been collecting about 150 million plastic items from almost two thousand supermarkets before its collapse last year.
Kirsty Bishop-Fox, president of Zero Waste Victoria says the problem is, there is no market demand for soft plastic waste.
“What we’ve got to do is look at the real problem … The reason it’s not being turned into something else is because there’s not a great use for them,” she told Ross and Russel.
“We need to be able to turn that plastic bag into something or we need to stop creating so many plastic bags.
