The reforms being pushed to protect Australia’s youngest workers
There’s a push for national reform to protect Australia’s youngest workers, which currently sees laws vary in different states.
In Victoria, minors as young are 13 are allowed to work as long it’s for limited hours in a day and in a ‘light’ setting such as retail or fast food.
Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association (SDA) secretary Josh Peak – who’s based in South Australia – said Victoria had “some of the highest protection” for the country’s youngest workers.

“We have junior rates laws in Australia,” he told Tom Elliott on 3AW Mornings.
“It’s 40 per cent of the adult rate – we’re also trying to seek reform on people under 18 not (currently) earning superannuation.”
