The ‘rent-a-cow’ scheme getting young people into dairy farming
A ‘rent-a-cow’ scheme has been hatched to encourage young people to get into dairy farming.
Gippsland farmer Damian Murphy told Tom Elliott it can be very hard for young farmers to build capital.
‘A cow, generally, is $1,300. Banks will only finance about 30% of that,’ Mr Murphy said.
But now, established farmers can ‘loan’ their cows to up-and-comers to give them a start.
‘We need regeneration in our industry, and this is a great way of doing it.’
