The leader of the Transport Matters Party says “S” plates for older drivers “didn’t get any traction” when floated in parliament, but has called for drivers over 65 to regularly sit licence renewal tests.

The issue was raised on 3AW Mornings this week, with a young caller, Riley, suggesting drivers over 70 should have to display “S” plates on their car, in similar fashion to learner and probationary drivers.

Rod Barton, leader of the Transport Matters Party, told Neil Mitchell the idea had been raised before but didn’t get much support.

He’s adamant something needs to change.

“I think it’s a ridiculous scenario,” he said.

“You get your licence at 18 and here I am, 46 years later, and have never been approached by VicRoads.

“I could have a wooden leg now and be blind on one side and hear voices in my head, but nobody has ever checked me.”
