The simple road rule change that could cut crashes by 20 per cent
Victorian drivers could be required by law to keep their headlights on at all times under an MP’s proposal for a radical road rule shake-up.
Liberal Upper House MP Nick McGowan is calling for the change in a bid to tackle the rising road toll.
He told Neil Mitchell he wants all daytime running lights made mandatory on all new imported cars, and called for a law change to require retrofitting of older vehicles.

A study published by Monash University last month found daytime running lights — which are mandatory in all new vehicles in some countries including Canada — can reduce the risk of crashes by up to 20 per cent.
One of the study authors, Professor Stuart Newstead, told Ross and Russel it’s “likely that normal headlights would produce a similar sort of benefit”.
