Almost one-in-four Australians have had their personal data stolen online, concerning new data reveals.

Figures from the SEC Newgate Mood of the Nation Report also show one-in-five people have cancelled subscriptions in the past month due to security concerns.

Tech expert and editor of EFTM.com, Trevor Long, says Australians are now questioning every bit of information they hand over, and that’s a good thing.

“Unfortunately, for most of us, the horse has bolted and really a lot of our information is already in the hands of businesses,” he told Ross and Russel.

Mr Long suggests making a “fake persona” with a false birthday, postcode and other personal details, for use online.

“Don’t make them random because then you’ll never be able to recover your account if there’s any issues,” he warned.
