The student-led class on democracy and politics
Victoria SRC, the peak body representing school-aged students in Victoria, says a student-led class on civics, politics and democracy will be used to fill gaps in their knowledge.
The idea came from a working group in which students felt like they wanted to know more about the “nuts and bolts” of what public policy is, and there were parts of that story they could tell and would be engaging to other students.
Executive Officer Social Education Victoria Laura Newman told Tom Elliott it’s an effective way of learning.
“We know that learning happens so much better when students and teachers are in partnership with each other,” she said on 3AW Drive.
“The curriculum really needs to help students to be active and informed members of the community.
“So that doesn’t necessarily mean going to protests, although it can, more likely it means that learning how to advocate for issues.”
