The ‘superb’ gesture that caught Neil Mitchell’s attention

Neil Mitchell has praised the leadership of new Australian Test cricket captain Pat Cummins after he took action on the presentation podium to ensure the entire team could celebrate their Ashes victory together.

Cummins noticed Usman Khawaja, a Muslim, jump off stage as champagne bottles were being opened by his teammates, as is fashion in many sporting wins.

But a quick-thinking Cummins instructed the players to put the bottles away before recalling Khawaja to the stage.

“I thought that was superb leadership,” Neil Mitchell said.

“That really stood out to me.”
