Those seeking cosmetic surgeries — including facelifts, nose jobs, breast enhancement and even Botox — will soon need a GP referral and could even be instructed to visit a psychiatrist.

Tough new Medical Board of Australia rules on cosmetic surgery will come into effect on July 1.

President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Dr Tim Edwards, says recommending patients bring a GP referral is already something many plastic surgeons do.

“It’s just really formalising a process and mandating it,” he told Ross and Russel.
