The ‘trouble’ with Optus’ latest communication to customers
A cybersecurity expert says people should expect large-scale data breaches from time to time, but the way Optus has handled its massive breach has been “very poor”.
Chief strategy officer at CyberCX, Alastair MacGibbon, claims a point highlighted by Optus is “patently wrong”.
“I’ve read and re-read Optus’ press release from yesterday and here’s the thing … there are about 2.1 million people affected with some form of their identity documents compromised, and then Optus says there are 7.7 million other people,” Mr MacGibbon said.
“The trouble is what they haven’t really said is those people have still had their mobile numbers, email addresses, date of birth, possibly their home addresses, exposed to criminals.
“This concept that there’s ‘only’ 2.1 million people whose information is exposed is just patently wrong based on my reading of their press release.”
