Australia has a $19 billion dollar food waste problem, with fussy eaters opting for gourmet meals over leftovers contributing to the issue.

Senior Lecturer at Central Queensland University, Dr Monika Kansal, believes children are the main source of the problem.

“It’s everybody’s responsibility to reduce food waste, but it’s mainly the children who contribute the most,” she told Ross and Russel.

“That’s one of the big issues, they are fussy about what they eat, if the food is not appealing enough, then they discard those foods and push them away.”

The lecturer claims improving the supply chain is a big way to reduce food waste, but says parents educating their children will be the main solution to the problem.

“There is an opportunity for parents to talk to their children, there could be a fun leftover night where the children has been given something from the fridge and be creative with the food and finish everything off so that it doesn’t go to the bin.”
