‘The whole house shook’: Earthquake on the Mornington Peninsula

A small earthquake has struck the Mornington Peninsula, a 2.8 magnitude quake with the epicentre near Merricks and Balnarring felt at 12.52pm.

Caller Glenn told Tom Elliott he was in Mt Martha when he felt the quake.

“The whole house shook,” he said.

“My house is on stumps, you could feel the whole house physically shake.”

Kurt said he could feel the rumble in Red Hill.

“It rattled all the bottles, I thought it must have been a huge truck go past,” Kurt said.

“But then 20 minutes later there was another one.”

Spiro Spiliopoulos, Seismologist with Geosciences Australia, told Tom Elliott there was another smaller earthquake, a bit further north at Toolangi.

“We’ve had about 13 earthquakes since 2010 so they’re quite common on the Mornington Peninsula,” Spiro said.

The SES say there have not been any reports of damage.
