The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission trawls through wastewater drug monitoring data every year.

And 2017’s report shows heroin use is highest in Melbourne.

Some regional Victorian towns are also showing large spikes.

Use of the drug ice has also jumped in Victoria, and it remains the most commonly used illicit drug in the nation.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan says the data won’t be ignored.

Consumption rates of cocaine and MDMA have fallen.

Victoria has also recorded below-average alcohol consumption.
