‘Can you sling us $1 billion?’: Tom Elliott left shocked by TAC bailing out the state government
The state government has been slammed by Tom Elliott, as he revealed the under the table ways that motorists are being ripped off.
Looking into the newly released state budget, the 3AW Mornings host highlighted that the surplus keeping Victoria afloat is thanks to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

“It is a piggy bank. It is an ATM for a cash strapped state government. Why should we, as motorists, pay these hugely expensive rego fees for a big chunk of the money, over $1 billion each year to be given back to the government?” Elliott said.
Victoria is home to some of the highest car registration fees in the world, with close neighbour New Zealand costing only $173, compared to Victoria’s $930.
Economist Leith van Onselen said the move by the state government is “pretty egregious”.
“This is basically tax by stealth,” van Onselen said.
