Tom Elliott says the federal government has “gone to water” over citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day.

It comes after the Labor government reversed a Coalition-era decision and will now allow councils who don’t recognise January 26 to hold citizenship ceremonies either side of the controversial date.

Tom Elliott says it’s a “wishy-washy” approach from the federal government.

“Either celebrate Australia Day, and we acknowledge that day, or we pick a different one,” he said.

Melbourne multicultural and First Nations advocate, Peter Mousaferiadis, said it hinted at a gradual move away from January 26.

“I do think this is part of a broader strategy,” he said.
