An alleged car thief has collided with a police car while towing a stolen vehicle worth $250,000.

The man used a stolen Ford Territory to hitch up a trailer carrying a stolen Nissan Skyline GTR.

The owner of the vehicle, which had recently been delivered from overseas, had fitted it with GPS. He noticed suspicious movements and notified police, who followed the vehicle and attempted to intercept it in Diamond Creek.

The offender collided with a police car on Reynolds Road and the Air Wing pursued the car through Hurstbridge before it crashed into a fence.

The driver fled on foot.

Police arrested the man, a 20-year-old from Bundoora, a short time later.
