A former NASA engineer, who last week became the third Australian to travel to space, says he was “completely unprepared” for what he saw on the 15 minute journey.

Dr Chris Boshuizen embarked on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Space Capsule.

Before takeoff he was a little worried that he “knew too much about space” and it would lessen the experience.

But Dr Boshuizen says he couldn’t have been more wrong about that.

“I was completely unprepared for what I was about to see. It was the most beautiful thing I ever laid my eyes on — just the colour and the brilliance,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“No photo could ever do it justice.

“The black of space is definitely something I’ve never seen before.”

Dr Boshuizen says there’s something spiritual about travelling outside Earth’s atmosphere.

“Of the 10 billion humans who have ever existed … fewer than 600 people have seen this view and I think until millions have seen it, it’s going to remain a spiritual experience.”
