A third party provider is being blamed after Myer and Coles gift cards couldn’t be redeemed over the past week.

Issues were resolved late yesterday, but many customers had their gift cards declined at various stores across Victoria.

On Monday Martin told Tony Jones his $150 gift card Coles gift card was declined at the supermarket in Kilmore, then yesterday Trevor told 3AW he couldn’t pay for his petrol when his Coles Express gift card wasn’t accepted.

Consumer Action Law Centre CEO Gerard Brody told Tony Jones it’s a timely reminder that gift cards are not the same as cash.

“Things do go wrong,” Gerard said.

“What the retailers are saying is one of the third-party suppliers that run the systems behind the gift cards has had a failure, and that’s contributed to the stuff up.

“But it’s caused a lot of grief for people.”
