Three young men have prompted an expensive rescue mission by getting stuck while climbing Uluru.

The group of 23-year-olds veered off the designated pathway into a restricted zone and became stuck in a crevice.

It took crews almost 12 hours to bring them to safety.

The men, who ignored pleas from the site’s traditional owners to not climb the ancient rock, spent the night in freezing conditions.

Melbourne man David Rowe was walking around the base of Uluru just before the men became stranded.

He told 3AW Breakfast it would have been a cold night.

‘It’s warm during the day but once the sun disappears – it gets quite chilly,’ he explained.

‘I wouldn’t like to spend the night up there, that’s for sure.’
