A man has been charged with murder following a deadly fire at a Footscray factory.

The blaze tore through the abandoned building on Ballarat Road on Thursday morning before the bodies of three people – believed to be squatters – were uncovered.

A 52-year-old man was arrested later that day and has since been charged with three counts of murder, three counts of arson causing death and one count of arson.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
