UPDATE: A 73-year-old woman has handed herself in following the hit-run death of a three-year-old boy in Melbourne’s west.

The boy reportedly ran out onto McIntyre Road at Sunshine North about 6.30pm on Thursday night.

He was struck by a red sedan.

The driver failed to stop, taking off from the scene in a northerly direction.

“There is a possibility the driver may not have known they collected the small child,” Superintendent John Fitzpatrick, Road Policing Operations and Investigation Division at Victoria Police, told Neil Mitchell on Friday morning.

A 73-year-old woman has since handed herself in.

Investigators are appealing for information, and anyone driving in the area with dashcam vision is urged to come forward to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
