Thursday spin: ‘Victoria is in a law and order bidding war’

Tom Elliott

The Victorian Government today put on a big press conference with big names to make a big announcement about 300 new police officers hitting the streets next month.

They made the same announcement in a press release on Friday.

And no, the doubling up does not mean we’re getting 600.

‘The spin is overwhelming,’ said Neil Mitchell, though conceding today’s press conference revealed where the officers would be sent.

Today’s ‘announcement’ came on the same day the Herald Sun reported a plan to keep violent offenders in jail without charge.

‘It shows the government is really worried about law and order,’ Neil added.

‘They’re trying to out-tough Matthew Guy and his mandatory sentencing; we’re in a bidding match.’

Later, Neil Mitchell interview police chief Graham Ashton.
