Tim Lane learnt his family’s Wye River house was destroyed in the Lorne fire while on commentating duties at the Boxing Day Test on Macquarie Radio yesterday.

More than 100 properties burned down in the destructive fire along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

Tim today told colleagues and listeners he received the news about his long-time holiday home from a neighbour via a text message on Saturday morning.

‘It was a sad day yesterday, and a really disorienting one,’ he told John Emburey on-air.

‘It is heaven on earth, Wye River … and it was visited by hell.’

Tim praised firefighters for controlling the blaze without any loss of life.

‘Their efforts have to be acknowledged. It must take such courage and commitment to your community.’
