Liberal MP Tim Wilson has hit back at suggestions he seriously predicted a Labor victory at the next federal election.

Mr Wilson, the member for Goldstein, was recorded saying he could ‘see a scenario’ where there was a Labor Government with One Nation having the balance of power in the Senate while speaking at a marriage equality forum.

But Mr Wilson told Tom Elliott he was trying to make a hypothetical point while responding to a question from the audience.

‘I think we’re going to storm home to victory and smash apart Bill Shorten,’ he told 3AW Drive.

‘I think there’s been a deliberate and unfortunate misrepresentation of my remarks.’
