Time for Australia to ditch the Queen?

Article image for Time for Australia to ditch the Queen?

Seven from eight of Australia’s state and territory leaders have signed their support for an Australian Head of State.

Despite identifying as a Republican, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett was the only state leader to have refused to sign the document.

Republican Movement Chair Peter Fitzsimons says the time has come to change the system.

Almost 55 per cent of voters opted against a republic at a referendum in 1999, however there are growing calls for Australia to appoint its own head of state.
