Time is right for Heppell to captain: Matthew Lloyd
Matthew Lloyd says the time is right for Jobe Watson to stand aside as Essendon captain.
The Bombers’ skipper was the last of the suspended crop of players to confirm their future, but he announced on Friday he would play on in 2017.
Lloyd said it is ‘fantastic’ that Jobe will be able to add a new chapter to his career.
However, he said young gun Dyson Heppell should take Watson’s place as captain.
‘I personally feel it would be a great time for Heppell to take over and let Jobe just play,’ Lloyd said.
Lloyd said Essendon’s list is looking better than Richmond’s and Collingwood’s now that it has most of its suspended players back.
Meanwhile, Lloyd also said the AFL should consider scheduling the Bombers’ first match with the reunited squad as the season opener.
‘The buzz would be absolutely massive,’ he said.
