Tips on how to burn wood ‘cleanly’ at home, as council ramps up bid to ban it
The City of Yarra has come under scrutiny over a push to ban wood-fired heaters.
The proposal has the backing of Asthma Australia.
But Todd Gelletly, Managing Director of Gelletly Red Gum Firewood and former member of the Firewood Association Committee, told Neil Mitchell it was an overreaction.
He said it was possible to burn wood cleanly, limiting the annoyance and asthma risk to neighbours.
“Yes, you can,” he said.
“One of the worst things you can do to your wood heater is put three or four pieces of wood on it and close the flue down straight away.
“You really need to let that wood catch on for about 20 minutes and then close your flue down after that.”
He said 85 per cent of the issues relating to excess smoke from wood-fired heaters came from 15 per cent of owners.
He said education was the key.
