Tom Elliott blasts City of Melbourne’s same-sex marriage support

Tom Elliott has hit out at Lord Mayor Robert Doyle over the City of Melbourne’s public show support for same-sex marriage.

The Town Hall will be lit up in rainbow colours this week, backing the bid for marriage equality in Australia.

Councillor Doyle said he was in a “privileged position to read public sentiment” and that it was time for change.

“It might well be, but it is not the concern of the City of Melbourne,” Tom Elliott said.

“The City of Melbourne is just a glorified suburban council, that’s all it is – roads, rubbish and rates.

“How we deal with same-sex marriage is a matter for the federal government – it has nothing to do with local councils.

“It just makes me angry.”
