Tom Elliott blasts council over Australia Day hypocrisy

Tom Elliott has ripped into the Mornington Peninsula Council after it emerged it was cancelling a number of Australia Day events due to COVID-19, but will proceed with a Survival Day ceremony on the same day.

Events at Rosebud, Rye and Dromana have been abandoned.

The Survival Day event at Mt Martha will go ahead.

“It can’t be both,”  Tom Elliott said.

“Either it’s all wrong, or all right, but you can’t favour one issue over another.”

He fears local councils will use the “cover of COVID” to cancel Australia Day events, some he expects will never return.

He also took exception to the fact those with Indigenous heritage could attend the Survival Event for free, yet those who weren’t must pay $38 to attend.

“So, based on your race, you will pay a different amount of money,” he said.
