A refugee advocate has taken aim at Peter Dutton over claims they were encouraging ‘false hope’ for those stuck in detention.

The immigration minister sparked anger on Tuesday by blaming activists for the recent incidents of self-immolation by refugees in detention.

Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition, said it was ridiculous to suggest activists had encouraged those in detention to harm themselves.

‘It blew up in Scott Morrison’s face and it will blow up in Peter Dutton’s,’ Mr Rintoul said on 3AW Drive.

‘If there was any evidence, you would have seen it.’
