Tom Elliott says Australia could soon find itself in an extremely awkward position if reports China is planning on supplying Russia with weapons are correct.

China’s unwillingness to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the source of global tension and has led the United States to claim the country is tacitly supporting Vladimir Putin.

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne warned on Tuesday that “countries that directly support Russia in this unlawful invasion would face consequences”.

“If China is found to be supplying weapons to Russia, then the Americas are saying we’ll have to have economic sanctions against China,” Tom Elliott said on 3AW.

“Now, it’s one thing for Australia to have sanctions against Russia, because frankly aside from vodka and a bit of caviar, we don’t really buy and sell much between Russia and Australia.

“But between us, and China?

“If we stop importing things from China, you’ll walk into Bunnings and there will be nothing there.

“You’ll walk into Kmart and there will be nothing there.

“You’ll walk into any discount clothing store and there will be nothing there.

“Would you cop it?”
