Social commentator Jamila Rizvi says it’s important to consider cultural appropriation this Halloween.

During her regular weekly discussion with Tom Elliott, she said there were some obvious examples of offensive and inappropriate costumes, like blackface.

“I do think being appropriate and respectful around Halloween and not getting too carried away is an important thing,” she said.

“If you are a white person do not paint your face brown, do not paint your face black – that’s not funny, it’s offensive.

“We are at a point where we understand the historical roots of blackface being offensive.”

She said it was important to be respectful when putting on a costume – such as a native American headdress.

But Tom Elliott questioned if it was just the outrage machine.
