Tom Elliott says a government decision to deny a shark attack victim a disability pension highlights just how flawed the system is.

A spearfisherman in Queensland had his right leg removed from the hip down after he was attacked by a bull shark in February.

He applied with Centrelink for a disability pension, but the department rejected his claim.

“The bloke has had his right leg removed by a wild shark!” Tom Elliott exclaimed on Friday.

“Remember, this is the same organisation that hands out dole payments willy-nilly to people who buy drugs and make absolutely no effort to get a job each day.

“But Centrelink, in its infinite wisdom, has said no.”
