A recent state governments decision allows individual councils to create their own Codes of Conduct.

One that caught Tom Elliott’s eye was that of the Colac Otway Shire.

Tom sat down with Monash Councillor Geoff Lake to discuss different codes emerging across the state.

Under the council’s new Code of Conduct councillors must seek permission from the mayor before interacting with the media.

Under that new code they are also required to ‘maintain a positive tone with the media’.

Tom Elliott sees this is a problem, ‘I rely on councillors like you (Geoff) to let me know what’s going on,’ says Tom.

‘I couldn’t agree with you more that it is out of place,’ Councillor Lake said on 3AW Drive.

‘If they refuse to sign that code of conduct, they get sacked.’
